What Does Avant-Garde Stand For?
There are so many different associations and assumptions that are made when something is labeled as being avant-garde, and the term can actually be applied to a wide range of different types of things, from the arts to almost anything which involves carving new ground in a respective field. Avant-garde is generally considered to be related to the arts however, and is often applied in the fields within these such as music, theater, film and literature, along with the visual art, which is most often associated with the term itself.
In terms of the history of the term avant-garde, it is actually related to the word vanguard, which is the military term for the group of soldiers that would be the first into battle, and these would often be the bravest and the fiercest soldiers that could be found within their respective armies. When the term was actually adopted and adapted to the more recognized modern use relating to culture, the first documented cases were to be found in the early parts of the nineteenth century, but it wasn't until much later towards the end of that century that the term actually became widely used and recognized within the field.
There has always been a lot of criticism and debate about what will actually be considered as a part of the avant-garde, and it is very much a movement that began as a French trend, but was then taken on and used on a wider basis, as experimental artists from around the world started to identify with the movement, and also start to label themselves as being avant-garde. Being part of a group that is largely isolated from the mainstream, but dedicated enough to be focused on what they are actually doing themselves is a lot of what being avant-garde is all about.
A lot of what makes people want to be considered as a part of the avant-garde movement is that they will actually be standing out from the crowd, and in a world where a lot of art in various media are conforming with existing trends, and fitting in with the already established norms, standing out is often seen as something very attractive to be. As well as being identified as an artist that is genuinely breaking new ground and experimenting, being accepted into the avant-garde fraternity is being part of a very exclusive informal group of artists that are all pioneering within their respective fields.
On the whole being a part of the avant-garde movement will be a very individual and artistic choice depending on the work that is being produced, and especially when it comes to those who are producing artworks that look or work in a particularly unusual way, then it can often be considered avant-garde. It isn't just about being different and standing out from contemporaries, but avant-garde is something which really stands for being an individual and being creative in ways that haven't been imagined or haven't been explored before, and breaking new ground that will push the boundaries of the field of art or media that is being used.
