Avant-Garde In Fashion - What Is It?
When it comes to the most famous avant-garde artists, then their fashion senses have often been bold and individual in of themselves, but there is also a movement of actually creating fashion that is avant-garde, and with clothes being so important in terms of expressing individuality, it is perfectly natural that designers will want to try and develop and experiment with fashion. Some people may see the clothing as being vastly different to the norm, and finding that avant-garde doesn't make it into the mainstream is not unusual at all, as the clothing is not designed to do so.
Indeed, part of the aim of avant-garde in fashion is actually to make clothing that not only looks unusual, but works or fits in a different way to normal clothing, and the overall image and how it is combined with other parts of an overall outfit will be a big part of the image that is portrayed. It is easy for fashion designers trying to be avant-garde to go over the top, but in most cases it is far more important for the look to be striking and individual than it is for the clothing to actually be practical and something that can be worn on a regular basis.
There are some examples of the avant-garde in fashion making it into the mainstream, but this isn't usually going to be something which goes in the normal way, with the look of Mork in the TV series Mork and Mindy very much fitting into the avant-garde tradition, and in the way that it can be used in other artistic media, avant-garde in fashion does work in this type of situation. When it comes to the overall image that is portrayed, avant-garde is really very much about looking different, and portraying an image that hasn't been seen, or portrayed from a certain perspective previously.
The reality about avant-garde fashion is that it really isn't designed to be used on a day to day basis at all, but that it is really all about showing what can be done and how things can be done differently in terms of clothing. With the majority of such items being created for female models to wear, many of the dresses and outfits that fall into the avant-garde fashion bracket are so ludicrously impractical that the model can barely walk up and down a catwalk successfully, let alone doing simple things such as sitting down or driving a car, but ultimately it is the artistic look that the designer will be looking for with each example of such fashion.
Looking at the avant-garde in fashion is very much about looking distinctive, and it will often utilize materials that aren't actually typical for clothing when creating their wearable artworks, and although it may not be the case that it is something that will be worn time and again, it is clothing that works for a specific purpose. Looking good and individual is what avant-garde fashion is all about, and the importance of form over function is entirely a part of the medium.
